On this occasion, I would like to express my gratitude for being appointed as the Director of the Todai Institutes for Advanced Study (TODIAS). It is a tremendous honor and privilege that President Hamada has given me a position of such great responsibility.

TODIAS will comprise a host of research institutes, each of which must satisfy the following three requirements: to be evaluated as a world-class research hub by governmental organizations and global communities of researchers; to acquire sufficient external funds to sustain its operation; and to provide an international research environment.

At the inaugural steering committee of TODIAS on Jan.11, 2011, committee members are in consensus that the Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (IPMU) is a suitable organization that meets all the criteria. We have decided to designate IPMU as the first institute within TODIAS.

IPMU was founded in October 2007 following its selection for the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The institute serves as a platform where a whole range of mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers cooperate with one another seeking to unlock the fundamental mysteries of the Universe, humanity’s never-ending quest. Under the outstanding leadership of Director Hitoshi Murayama, IPMU has evolved steadfastly since its inception and has now about 60% of its researchers coming from abroad. It has come to be widely recognized as a “world-leading center of knowledge” in relevant research communities throughout the world.

I am deeply committed to providing the best possible research environment for IPMU so that it can conduct research activities more quickly, flexibly and actively under stable management. This will help enhance the University of Tokyo’s academic excellence and internationalization. I would like to ask for your continued support and cooperation both at home and abroad.

国際高等研究所長(当時)ご挨拶

このたび、濱田総長より、新たな全学組織として設置された東京大学国際高等研究所長に指名され、責任の重さに身の引き締まる思いです。

本研究所には、(1)世界トップレベルの研究拠点として公的機関や研究者コミュニティー等に評価されていること、(2)運営を賄うに十分な外部資金を獲得していること、(3)国際的な研究環境を構築していること、の3つの要件を満たす研究機構を置くこととされています。

1月11日に開催された第1回運営委員会において、これらの要件を全て満たす研究機構として、「数物連携宇宙研究機構(IPMU)」が適当であるとの意見がとりまとめられ、これを踏まえ、本研究所に置く研究機構の第一号として、同機構を決定しました。

同機構は、文部科学省の「世界トップレベル研究拠点形成プログラム(WPI)」への採択を契機に2007年10月に発足しました。そこでは数学者と物理学者と天文学者が協力して、人類が数千年にわたって考えてきた根源的な宇宙の謎に挑んでおります。発足以来、村山斉機構長の卓越したリーダーシップの下で着実に成長し、現在では専任研究者の約6割の外国人研究者を擁し、当該分野の世界の研究者コミュニティーに広く認知され、まさに「世界を担う知の拠点」の一つとなっております。

私は、同機構が、より安定的な体制の下で迅速かつ柔軟に、これまでにもまして活発な研究活動を展開し、東京大学の学術の卓越性の向上及び国際化を先導できるよう、研究環境の整備・充実に最大限努めてまいります。国内外の皆様方におかれましても、ご支援、ご協力のほど、よろしくお願いいたします。
